Cetirizine is an over-the-counter antihistaminic medicine that is generally used to treat allergy.

What are the uses of Cetirizine?

Cetirizine is an antihistaminic medication, which reduces natural histamine produced in the body. Histamine is a chemical made by the body when you come in contact with an allergen (a substance causing allergy). The release of histamine causes symptoms related to an allergic
reaction, such as sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose.
Cetirizine can be thus used to treat allergic disorders like;

  • Annual allergic rhinitis
  • Seasonal allergic rhinitis
  • Vasomotor rhinitis (inflammation of the nose linings not caused by allergy)

It can also be used for treating cold symptoms, allergic conjunctivitis, and urticaria (itchy, raised rashes on the skin).

How do you use Cetirizine?

  • Take this medicine orally once a day with or without food or as prescribed by your physician.
  • Take this tablet daily at the same time.
  • Follow all the instructions on the prescription label.
  • Do not stop taking this medication abruptly without consulting your doctor. If You Miss the Dose
  • If you happen to miss a dose of Cetirizine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
  • However, if it is almost time for the next dose, do not take the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose.
  • Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed dose.

What are the side-effects and risks of Cetirizine?

Cetirizine is a newer molecule, second-generation antihistamines. Hence, unlike the first generation, it has fewer side effects. Having said that it does have side effects that are categorized below: Serious Side Effects: If you experience any of the below adverse reactions stop using Cetirizine and call your doctor immediately

  • Lesser or no urination
  • Confusion
  • Vision problems
  • Weakness or uncontrolled tremors (shaking)
  • Insomnia
  • Fast or uneven heartbeat
  • Feeling agitated
  • Abdominal pain
  • Depression
  • Hallucination
  • Difficulty in breathing or swallowing
  • Fits
  • Suicidal thoughts

Less serious side effects: The below mentioned are commonly expected side effects of the medication;

  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • Constipation
  • Sore Throat
  • Cough
  • Dry mouth
  • Feeling tired
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness

  • Diarrhea

Extremely rare side-effects:

Who should not take Cetirizine?

You should not take Cetirizine if you have the following conditions:
