Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) belongs to the group of medications called vitamin D3 metabolites. Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) is a form of vitamin D that is active in the body. It helps to maintain the balance of calcium and phosphorus in the blood. It also helps bones absorb calcium.

Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) is used to help increase the amount of calcium in the blood and help with proper bone formation for people with chronic kidney failure that are undergoing dialysis. It is also used to increase the amount of calcium in the blood for people whose parathyroid glands are not working effectively, such as after surgery. Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) may also be used to treat vitamin D-resistant rickets, a bone disease caused by too little vitamin D.

Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. The recommended starting dose of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) for adults is 0.25 µg daily. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on blood tests and the amount of calcium in your blood.

Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.

The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who takes Rocaltrol (Calcitriol). If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) with your doctor.

The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol). Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.

Although most of the side effects listed below don't happen very often, they could lead to serious problems if you do not seek medical attention.

• decreased appetite

Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol).

Since caffeine, alcohol, the Nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.

Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or Allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use Rocaltrol (Calcitriol).

Blood tests: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) causes changes to the amounts of calcium, magnesium, and phosphate in the blood. Your doctor will schedule regular blood tests to ensure that the levels of these minerals continue to be appropriate while you are taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol).

Heart Arrhythmias: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) increases the amount of calcium in the bloodstream. Too much calcium can interfere with the regular rhythm of the heart. If you have irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia) discuss with your doctor how Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol), and whether any special monitoring is needed.

Hypercalcemia: It is important to follow your doctor's instructions for taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol). Hypercalcemia, or high blood calcium levels, can occur. To help prevent the risk of this, follow any dietary suggestions your doctor has provided. Do not increase or decrease the amount of calcium in your diet without discussing the change with your doctor first. Also, keep your appointments for blood tests to monitor your calcium levels. Symptoms of high blood calcium include bone pain, decreased appetite, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, metallic taste in mouth, muscle pain, stomach ache, thirst, weakness, and weight loss. If you experience any of these symptoms, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor immediately.

Pregnancy: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol), contact your doctor immediately.

Breast-feeding: Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) may pass into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking Rocaltrol (Calcitriol), it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.

Children: The safety and efficacy of Rocaltrol (Calcitriol) have not been established for children under the age of 18 years.
