How Does Ativan Affect Sleep?
Ativan (lorazepam) is a prescription medicine that belongs to the group of drugs called benzodiazepines. It may be prescribed alone or in combination for sleep issues, anxiety, or epilepsy.
It is believed that Ativan works by increasing the activity of certain natural chemicals (neurotransmitters) in the brain.
Ativan may also be given to treat irritable bowel syndrome, nausea, and vomiting caused by cancer treatment, or alcohol withdrawal to control the agitation.
What Is The Right Ativan Dosage For Sleep
Ativan is available as a solid (tablet) and liquid (concentrate) dosage form.
Here are some common directions for its use:
- It is to be taken two or three times a day. You can take it with or without food. The liquid concentrate comes with a marked dropper, so measuring the dose becomes easy.
- You must follow directions on your prescription label or ask your physician or pharmacist in case of any queries regarding the dosing.
- The tablets are available in different strengths of 0.5mg, 1 mg, and 2 mg. Ativan doses can range from 2 to 6 mg/day in divided doses.
- If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose, and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose.

You should also inform your doctor if you are pregnant or are breastfeeding. You should immediately call your doctor if you get pregnant while on Ativan treatment.

However, Ativan is a habit-forming drug (physical dependence). It is advisable not to take large doses or take them more often than your doctor prescribed.
When taking Ativan for several days or weeks, do not stop the medication abruptly or take fewer doses without informing your doctor. Suddenly stopping Ativan can worsen your condition and may cause a withdrawal reaction.
Your physician may gradually lower your dose to discontinue its use, so the drug has minimal withdrawal reactions.
Is Xanax Or Ativan Better For Sleep?
Xanax and Ativan both belong to the benzodiazepine class of the drugs. Both the drugs are prescribed for anxiety, sleep-related disorders, and other psychiatric disorders.
