High blood pressure, also commonly known as hypertension, is a chronic condition where the blood force in your arteries is higher and eventually causes health problems, mainly cardiac disorders.

Bisoprolol and Clonidine are common medicines prescribed for high blood pressure in Canada. This article focuses on the similarities and differences of both medicines, including how to take them and their side effects.

If you have high blood pressure, you can work it out with your doctor to control it.

What causes high blood pressure?

In most cases, there is no real cause of hypertension. However, in some cases, high blood pressure is caused by an underlying condition. Various conditions and medications can cause high blood pressure, such as:

  • Genetics
  • Tobacco
  • Defects with the blood vessels
  • Medications such as nasal decongestants, pain killers, cold remedies, or birth control pills
  • Thyroid problems
  • Kidney disease
  • Too much salt consumption
  • Stress
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Adrenal gland tumors
  • Illegal drugs (Cocaine or amphetamines)
  • Pregnancy

How does medication help with high blood pressure?

Physicians prefer a combined regimen of medication. There are various types of medications available that help to reduce blood pressure.

Medications reduce blood pressure by various mechanisms such as helping in sodium and water elimination from the body. On the other hand, some of them help to relax blood vessels. Each class of medications acts differently, but they produce the same overall effect (reduce the blood pressure).

Bisoprolol and Clonidine for treating high blood pressure?

Bisoprolol belongs to the beta-blocker class of medication. This class of medications works by relaxing blood vessels and slowing the heart rate to decrease blood pressure. Bisoprolol may be used alone or in combination with other medications to reduce high blood pressure.

Clonidine belongs to alpha-agonist hypotensive agents. It lowers your blood pressure by decreasing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Clonidine can be used alone or in combination with other medications.

Comparing the Bisoprolol and Clonidine – Similarities vs differences

Similarities:

Bisoprolol and Clonidine are both used in the treatment of high blood pressure. Both the medications are available in tablet form. Both the drugs are indicated to treat high blood pressure and can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs.

In case if you are using either of the medication and are planning to get pregnant or are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your doctor immediately.

Clonidine and Bisoprolol both do not cure high blood pressure. They help to reduce blood pressure.

Bisoprolol and Clonidine may cause drowsiness, light-headedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position. To avoid this problem, you should get out of the bed slowly, rest your feet on the floor for a while before standing up. However, these effects are experienced during the initial phase of the treatment.

Clonidine and Bisoprolol should not be taken with alcohol. Ask your physician about the safe use of alcohol while taking either of the medications. Alcohol can make the side effects of both drugs worse.

If you are taking Clonidine or Bisoprolol, or both, you must inform your doctor or dentist before the surgery that you are on either or both the medication.

Differences:

Clonidine is available as a tablet and extended-release tablet form. On the other hand, Bisoprolol is available as a standard tablet.

Clonidine is usually prescribed twice a day. On the other hand, Bisoprolol is usually prescribed once daily.

Clonidine is used in the treatment of dysmenorrhea (severely painful cramps during menstruation), menopausal hot flushes, Tourette’s syndrome (a condition that is characterized by the need to perform repetitive motions or repeat sounds or words), opiate and alcohol withdrawal, smoking cessation therapy, attention deficit disorder (a disorder in which people find more difficulty in focusing, controlling actions, and remaining still or quiet as compared to other people of the same age). On the other hand, Bisoprolol may be sometimes used to treat heart failure.

Clonidine should not be used in the older population as the medicine is not safe as other medications.

Suppose you have heart failure, slow heart rate, heart, kidney, liver, or lung disease, asthma, a circulation disorder, severe allergies, diabetes, or hyperthyroidism. In that case, you should inform your physician if prescribed Bisoprolol. On the other hand, if you are recently prescribed Clonidine, you should inform your physician if you have a stroke, recent heart attack, kidney, or heart disease.
