High blood pressure, also commonly known as hypertension, is a chronic condition where the blood force in your arteries is higher and eventually causes health problems, mainly cardiac disorders.

Systolic blood pressure is a measurement of the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. On the other hand, diastolic pressure is a measurement of the pressure in your arteries in between the beats.

The average blood pressure value is 120/80 mm/Hg. High blood pressure would be defined as any value above 140/90 mm/Hg. You could suffer from high blood pressure without any symptoms. Uncontrolled hypertension puts you at serious risk of health problems.

If you have high blood pressure, you can work it out with your doctor to control it.

What causes high blood pressure?

In most cases, there is no real cause of hypertension. However, in some cases, high blood pressure is caused by an underlying condition. Various conditions and medications can cause high blood pressure, such as:

  • Genetics
  • Tobacco
  • Defects with the blood vessels
  • Medications such as nasal decongestants, pain killers, cold remedies, or birth control pills
  • Thyroid problems
  • Kidney disease
  • Too much salt consumption
  • Stress
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Adrenal gland tumors
  • Illegal drugs (Cocaine or amphetamines)
  • Pregnancy

How does high blood medication help?

Usually, physicians prescribe two or more medications as they work better than one. There are various types of medications available that help to reduce blood pressure.

Some of the medications help remove sodium and water from the body. On the other hand, some of them help to relax blood vessels. Others help reduce the workload on the heart or reduce the amount of blood pumped through the blood vessels. Each class of medications acts differently, but they produce the same overall effect (reduce the blood pressure).

Candesartan and Clonidine for treating high blood pressure?

Candesartan belongs to the angiotensin 2 receptor blocker class of drugs. It works by blocking a natural chemical (angiotensin) that tightens the blood vessels, relaxing your blood vessels that help reduce blood pressure and lower the chance of having a stroke or heart attack.  Candesartan can be used alone or in combination with other medications for treating high blood pressure.

Clonidine belongs to alpha-agonist hypotensive agents. It lowers your blood pressure by decreasing the heart rate and relaxing the blood vessels so blood can flow more easily. Clonidine can be used alone or in combination with other medications.

Comparing the Candesartan and Clonidine: Similarities and differences

Candesartan and Clonidine Similarities:

Candesartan and Clonidine are both used in the treatment of high blood pressure. Both the medications are available in tablet form. Both the drugs are indicated to treat high blood pressure and can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive drugs.

In case if you are using either of the medication and are planning to get pregnant or are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your doctor immediately.

Clonidine and Candesartan both do not cure high blood pressure, but help reduce blood pressure.

Candesartan and Clonidine may cause drowsiness, lightheadedness, and fainting when you get up too quickly from a lying position. To avoid this problem, you should get out of the bed slowly, rest your feet on the floor for a while before standing up. However, these effects are experienced during the initial phase of the treatment.

Candesartan and Clonidine Differences:

Clonidine is available as a tablet and extended-release tablet form. On the other hand, Candesartan is available as a standard tablet.

Candesartan may be prescribed to treat diabetic neuropathy (kidney disease because of high blood pressure). On the other hand, Clonidine is used in the treatment of dysmenorrhea (severely painful cramps during menstruation), menopausal hot flushes, Tourette’s syndrome (a condition that is characterized by the need to perform repetitive motions or repeat sounds or words), opiate and alcohol withdrawal, smoking cessation therapy, attention deficit disorder (a disorder in which people find more difficulty in focusing, controlling actions, and remaining still or quiet as compared to other people of the same age).

Clonidine may cause drowsiness, and consuming alcohol is not safe as the side effects of Clonidine may get worse. Clonidine should not be used in the older population as the medicine is not safe as other medications.

You should inform your physician if you have or ever had heart, kidney, or liver disease before you begin your treatment with Candesartan.

Side effects of Candesartan and Clonidine:

Candesartan may cause some side effects. Inform your doctor immediately if these symptoms are severe and do not go away:

Which one is right for you, Candesartan and Clonidine? Is any the best for you?

Depending upon various factors, such as your blood pressure, overall health, age, and other health problems, your physician will prescribe the correct medication for you.

Usually, when you are suffering from high blood pressure, a combination of different antihypertensive drugs is prescribed to get the best results of the therapy.

Candesartan and Clonidine Prescription, use, and dosage

Candesartan and Clonidine are both prescription medications. The treatment with both drugs is initiated at a low dose. Your physician will gradually increase the dose. Follow the instructions on your prescription label carefully and ask your physician or pharmacist to explain in case of any queries.

Candesartan and Clonidine are both used as antihypertensive medications. They lower the blood pressure; however, they do not cure it.

While taking Clonidine or Candesartan or both together, always follow instructions on your prescription label. In case of any queries, always ask your healthcare professional. Do not take more or less than prescribed by your physician. Both the medications may be prescribed once or twice daily.
