Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) belongs to a class of medications known as growth stimulants. Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) is a synthetic version of growth hormone. Growth hormone is made naturally in our bodies by the pituitary gland and is necessary for the stimulation of growth in children.

Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) is used to treat:

  • growth hormone deficiency in children (to replace growth hormone that they are unable to produce enough naturally)
  • growth failure in children due to chronic Kidney Disease
  • growth failure in children born small for gestational age (SGA) who do not catch up in growth by 2 years or later
  • short stature in people with Turner's syndrome
  • adults who have growth hormone deficiency (this can result from pituitary disease, surgery, radiation therapy, diseases of the hypothalamus, or trauma)

Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.

Your doctor may have suggested Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are taking Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin), speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) without consulting your doctor.

Do not give Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to take Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) if their doctor has not prescribed it.

The recommended dose depends on the circumstances and body weight of the person being treated. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose of Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) to be injected.

Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) is administered by injection only. It is usually injected subcutaneously (under the skin), although it can be given intramuscularly (into the muscle) if your doctor prefers. If it is injected under the skin, it is important to rotate the site of injection in order to minimize the risk of fat wasting at the site of injection.

If you are using Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) at home, your doctor will ensure that you understand exactly how to use it. Make sure you ask any and all questions necessary to ensure that you use it exactly as prescribed. Please refer to the appropriate package insert for details on how to mix the medicine and for proper injection procedures. It is important to visit your doctor regularly during therapy to ensure that the medication is working safely and effectively.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use Saizen Cartridge (Somatropin) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose of the medicine, call your doctor for further instructions. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one.
