Benadryl Allergy works by blocking the effects of histamine, a substance released by the body involved in allergies. It usually starts to work within one hour.

Benadryl Allergy may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Benadryl Allergy Dosage

Adults and children 12 years of age and older: The usual dose is 25 mg to 50 mg taken by mouth 3 or 4 times a day. No more than 200 mg should be taken in a 24-hour period. As there are various strengths and forms of diphenhydramine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking Benadryl Allergy. Take diphenhydramine exactly as directed by your doctor or pharmacist.

Children 6 to 11 years of age: The usual dose is 12.5 mg to 25 mg every 4 to 6 hours. No more than 100 mg should be taken in a 24-hour period.

Children 2 to 5 years of age: The usual dose is 6.25 mg every 4 to 6 hours. No more than 25 mg should be taken in a 24-hour period.

Children under 2 years of age: The usual dose is 3.125 mg every 4 to 6 hours. No more than 12.5 mg should be taken in a 24-hour period.

Do not give diphenhydramine capsules or caplets to children younger than 12 years of age unless directed to do so by your child's doctor. As there are various strengths and forms (e.g., children's liquid, elixir) of diphenhydramine, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before giving Benadryl Allergy to a child.

Use an oral syringe to measure each dose of the liquid, as it gives a more accurate measurement than household teaspoons.

Cream: For adults and children 2 years and over, apply a thin layer of cream 3 or 4 times a day to the affected area. If the skin condition worsens or persists for longer than 7 days, do not continue this medication without consulting your doctor or pharmacist. Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones above, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

Children's liquid
Each 5 mL of colourless, bubble gum-flavoured liquid contains 6.25 mg of diphenhydramine. Nonmedicinal ingredients: artificial bubble gum flavour, carboxymethylcellulose, citric acid, glycerin, saccharin, sodium benzoate, sodium citrate, sorbitol, vanilla flavour, and water.

Topical cream
Each gram of white-emulsion for topical use contains diphenhydramine 2% w/w. Nonmedicinal ingredients: cetyl alcohol, paraben, PEG, propylene glycol, and water.

Elixir
Each 5 mL of red elixir contains 12.5 mg of diphenhydramine. Nonmedicinal ingredients: alcohol, FD&C Red No. 2, flavouring agents, sugar, and water.

Benadryl Allergy Contraindications

Do not use this medication if you are allergic to diphenhydramine or any ingredients of the medication.

Do not use the topical cream on Chickenpox, Measles, raw areas of skin, broken skin, or on large areas of skin.

Glaucoma: Benadryl Allergy may cause the symptoms of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) to become worse.
