Hyoscine belongs to the group of medications called antispasmodics. Hyoscine is used to relieve smooth muscle spasms (cramps) in the stomach and intestines and in the bladder and urethra.

The usual dose of hyoscine tablets is 1 or 2 10 mg tablets per day. If you need to take Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) regularly, the usual dose is 1 tablet 3 to 5 times a day. The maximum dose is 6 tablets per day.
For the injection, the usual dose is 10 mg to 20 mg given by intramuscular (into a muscle), intravenous (into a vein), or subcutaneous (under the skin) injection. The maximum daily dose is 100 mg.
Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.
Swallow the tablets whole with a glass of water. Do not crush or chew the tablets.
It is important to use Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
Store Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.
Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
Many medications can cause side effects. A side effect is an unwanted response to a medication when it is taken in normal doses. Side effects can be mild or severe, temporary or permanent.
The side effects listed below are not experienced by everyone who uses Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide). If you are concerned about side effects, discuss the risks and benefits of Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) with your doctor.
The following side effects have been reported by at least 1% of people using Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide). Many of these side effects can be managed, and some may go away on their own over time.
Contact your doctor if you experience these side effects and they are severe or bothersome. Your pharmacist may be able to advise you on managing side effects.
Although most of the side effects listed below don't happen very often, they could lead to serious problems if you do not seek medical attention.

Tablets
Each round, white, sugar-coated tablet contains 10 mg of hyoscine butylbromide. Nonmedicinal ingredients: acacia, anhydrous dibasic calcium phosphate, carnauba wax, colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, modified starch, polyethylene glycol 6000, povidone, stearic acid, sucrose, talc, tartaric acid, titanium dioxide, and white wax.
Injection
Each mL contains 20 mg of hyoscine butylbromide. Nonmedicinal ingredients: sodium chloride and water for injection.

Medications other than those listed above may interact with Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide). Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the Nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.
Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or Allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide).
Difficulty urinating: Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) may make it more difficult for you to urinate. If you have an enlarged prostate, urinary retention, or difficulty urinating, discuss with your doctor how Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Fructose intolerance: Fructose intolerance is a rare condition in which fructose (a type of sugar) is not broken down by the body. One sugar-coated tablet of 10 mg contains 41.2 mg of sucrose, which can result in 411.8 mg of sucrose per day if the maximum recommended daily dose of hyoscine is needed. You should not use Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) if you have fructose intolerance.
Glaucoma: Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) may cause the symptoms of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye) to develop or become worse. If you have glaucoma, discuss with your doctor how Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide), and whether any special monitoring is needed. Report any changes in vision to your doctor as soon as possible while you are taking Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide).
Heart problems: Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) can increase your heart rate. If you have tachycardia (a fast heart rate), heart disease, an abnormal heart rhythm, heart failure, or mitral stenosis (a heart valve problem), discuss with your doctor how Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Stomach and intestinal problems: If you have reflux esophagitis, a medical condition that narrow or blocks the intestines (e.g., achalasia, pyloroduodenal stenosis), or Ulcerative Colitis, discuss with your doctor how Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Vision problems: Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) may affect your vision. Do not drive or operate machinery until any vision problems have resolved. If you receive Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) during a diagnostic procedure, you should arrange for someone to drive you home from the hospital or clinic after your procedure.
Get immediate medical attention if you experience a painful red eye with loss of vision.
Pregnancy: Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while using Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide), contact your doctor immediately.
Breast-feeding: It is not known if hyoscine passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are using Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide), it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
Children: The safety and effectiveness of using Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide) have not been established for children.
Seniors: Seniors are more sensitive to the side effects of Buscopan (Hyoscine-butylbromide), especially constipation, dry mouth, and difficulty urinating. If you experience any of these side effects and they continue or are severe, contact your doctor.
