Frequently Asked Questions About Freestyle Libre Sensors

What is Freestyle Libre Sensor?

Freestyle Libre is a product that helps you to monitor your blood sugar levels without requiring a blood sample from a finger stick. Freestyle Libre sensor-based glucose monitoring system comes with a reader and a sensor. The sensor is applied to the back of the upper arm and can be worn for 14 days. You may download the app on your smartphone after purchasing the system (available with some models). The Foods and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Freestyle Libre in 2017 for adults.

Let us understand more about it, including its pros and cons and precautions that need to be taken.

How to use Freestyle Libre Sensor?

What are the approved label uses of Freestyle Libre Sensor?

Freestyle Libre Sensor is a flash glucose monitoring system that helps to monitor glucose continuously. The device is indicated for the management of diabetes in adults aged 18 and above. The product is designed to replace blood glucose testing for diabetes. It provides freedom from taking frequent blood samples throughout the day via finger sticks

Freestyle Libre sensor detects trends and patterns aiding in the identification of hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia episodes that helps in acute and chronic treatments

The product requires a prescription and can be used by a single patient only

Freestyle Libre Sensor will not be suitable for all the users. It is not approved for people who are on dialysis or pregnant women

What are some off-label uses of Freestyle Libre Sensor?

There has been no off-label use until now.

What are the instructions for Freestyle Libre Sensor?

The following instructions should be followed while using Freestyle Libre Sensor:

To set up the device, you must insert the sensor into your upper arm with an applicator that is included with the set

The size of the sensor is approximately about the size of a coin and must be applied just underneath the top layer of the skin

The application process is pain-free; however, some of the users have experienced mild irritation

Freestyle Libre sensor helps you check your blood glucose levels anytime you wish. It does not have automatic alert updates, but you should regularly set reminders to monitor your blood

glucose levels. You should monitor your blood glucose levels at least every 8 hours. The sensor can be worn for 14 days and replaced after 14 days.

How does Freestyle Libre Sensor work?

Like other traditional glucose monitors, Freestyle Libre Sensor helps to provide your blood glucose levels. It can work in either case, hypoglycemia (when blood sugar levels are too low) or hyperglycemia (when blood sugar levels are too high).

As you use the device continuously, it helps you identify the patterns of your blood sugar levels. For instance, you may notice upward, downward, or they are stable. Such information is vital in the diabetes treatment plan.

Who can use Freestyle Libre Sensor?

People who are suffering from diabetes and who frequently take blood samples daily via finger sticks to monitor their blood glucose levels are ideal for using the Freestyle Libre sensor.

It also comes in handy while you are traveling. The sensor is waterproof for up to 30 minutes, so you do not have to worry about the sensor getting destroyed while having a quick shower or bath or relaxing in a pool.

The device may not be suitable for every diabetes. You should also consider having a backup monitor if your device is not functioning correctly.

What are the risks associated with Freestyle Libre Sensor?

Though the device is FDA-approved, there are still some risks associated with using the Freestyle Libre sensor. They include:

False readings

Skin irritation at the site of sensor

Possibility of blood glucose issues while sleeping; in such cases, your system will not alert you

Possible increase or decrease of glucose levels that are not detected until you wave the monitor in front of the sensor

However, most Freestyle Libre Sensor users appreciate the device's ease of use and functionality.

What are the most important contraindications when on Freestyle Libre Sensor?

You may need to remove the monitoring system before Computed Tomography (CT) scan, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), or high-frequency electrical heat (diathermy) treatment. This is because exposure may alter the device’s functioning, causing incorrect readings.

What are the warnings and precautions of Freestyle Libre Sensor?

Inform your health worker about other prescription, non-prescription medications, and nutritional supplements that you are taking. Also, inform about vitamins and herbal supplements you are taking or planning to take.

You must have a prescription for purchasing the device. It is not available over the counter

Some of the features of Libre 2 are not available in the original product (the device will not alert you if your blood glucose levels are off until you check them)

Results of the device are not as accurate as of the traditional blood test

The device measures cellular fluids glucose instead of glucose in the blood

The device is to be used by adults above 18, not by children, pregnant women, or people who are on dialysis

Each sensor will last only 14 days, and you will need to replace it with a new one. You will have to purchase new sensors continuously; however, the monitoring system only once

Is There A Generic Version to Freestyle Libre Sensor?

No, there is no generic version of Freestyle Libre Sensor available in Canada. However, an upgraded version of the product is available, Freestyle Libre 2.

How Is Freestyle Libre Sensor Different from Other glucose monitoring devices?

Unlike other glucose monitoring devices, Freestyle Libre Sensor does not require a blood sample every time to measure your blood glucose level. It provides continuous glucose monitoring.

Who Makes Freestyle Libre Sensor and What Is Their Manufacturing Record of Success?

Abbott manufactures freestyle Libre sensors. It is a well-known, established pharmaceutical company. It manufactures other diabetes-related products and nutritional beverages, and baby formula.
