Frequently Asked Questions About Foclivia

What is Foclivia?

Foclivia is a mock-up vaccine recently approved in Canada for use in influenza pandemic preparedness plans. The vaccine prepares your body to fight infection by boosting your immunity.

How to use Foclivia?

What are some Foclivia label uses?

Foclivia is a vaccine approved in Canada for its use in the flu pandemic when it is declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) or Health Canada.

A flu pandemic occurs when a new flu virus emerges and spreads quickly because of a lack of immunity against the virus.

What are some Foclivia off-label uses?

There is no off-label use of the medicine so far.

Foclivia may be prescribed for other uses; ask your doctor or pharmacist for more information.

Directions For Use Foclivia

  • Foclivia is available as a vaccine to be taken in two doses.

  • There should be a gap of at least three weeks between both doses.
  • A doctor or nurse will give 0.5 mL of the vaccine into your upper arm.

Ingredients And Benefits Of Foclivia

The active ingredient of the vaccine is purified viral proteins. Foclivia contains some parts of the H5N1 virus, isolated from the virus grown in the hen’s eggs.

Before a pandemic emerges, no one knows the strain of the infective virus. So, companies cannot prepare the exact or correct vaccine. However, they can prepare a vaccine from a strain of flu virus that no one is exposed to as nobody is immune to it.

The companies will test the vaccine on people to gauge its action. This will allow them to understand how people may react to the flu strain if included in the vaccine.

Vaccines prepare your immune system to fight against an invading infectious organism. For Focilivia, it contains some part of the H5N1 virus. The virus is inactivated so that it does not cause full-blown disease.

When the pandemic occurs, the strain in Focilivia will be replaced by the virus causing a pandemic.

When you take a vaccine, your immune cells recognize the virus as “foreign” and produces antibodies against it to protect you. Now, if you come in contact with the same or similar virus

When the person comes into contact with this or a similar virus, these antibodies, together with other components of the immune system, will kill the viruses and help protect against the disease.

The vaccine also includes an adjuvant, which is an ingredient that helps in creating a more robust immune response.

Warnings and Precautions when taking Foclivia

  • Inform your health worker about other prescription and non-prescription medications that you are taking. Also, inform about vitamins, herbal and nutritional supplements that you are taking or planning to take.
