Acid Control

Acid Control (Famotidine) belongs to a class of medications called H2 antagonists. It is used to treat stomach and duodenal (intestinal) ulcers, GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease) (GERD), and conditions where too much stomach acid is secreted, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It is also used to prevent duodenal ulcers and prevent GERD symptoms from coming back. It works by reducing the amount of acid secreted by the stomach.

The over-the-counter form of Acid Control (Famotidine) is used to treat conditions where a reduction of stomach acid is needed, such as acid indigestion, heartburn, or sour or upset stomach. It can also be used to prevent these symptoms when they are associated with eating food or drinking beverages, including nighttime symptoms.

Acid Control (Famotidine) may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of Acid Control (Famotidine) may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of Acid Control (Famotidine) may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.

Your doctor may have suggested Acid Control (Famotidine) for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are using Acid Control (Famotidine), speak to your doctor. Do not stop using Acid Control (Famotidine) without consulting your doctor.

Do not give Acid Control (Famotidine) to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use Acid Control (Famotidine) if their doctor has not prescribed it.

Acid Control

Tablets: The usual adult dose of Acid Control (Famotidine) tablets ranges from 20 mg or 40 mg at bedtime to 20 mg or 40 mg twice daily, depending on the condition being treated. Acid Control (Famotidine) can be taken with or without food. Seniors and those with decreased kidney function may require lower doses or longer intervals between doses.

  • The dose of Acid Control (Famotidine) for treatment of duodenal ulcer is 40 mg at bedtime for 4 to 8 weeks, or less if healing occurs. Therapy is often continued after healing of the ulcer at a dose of 20 mg once daily for up to 6 to 12 months.
  • The usual dose for treatment of benign stomach ulcer is 40 mg once a day at bedtime for 4 to 8 weeks, or less if healing occurs.
  • For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and similar conditions, the dose varies with the individual patient, but often starts with 20 mg every 6 hours.
  • When used to relieve the symptoms of GERD or prevent GERD from returning, the usual dose is 20 mg twice daily. When used to treat esophageal damage related to GERD, the usual dose is 40 mg twice daily.

When used over-the-counter to treat acid indigestion, heartburn, or sour or upset stomach, the usual dose for adults and children 12 years of age or older is 10 mg to 20 mg when symptoms are experienced. To prevent symptoms brought on by consuming food or beverages, take the dose 10 to 15 minutes before eating food or drinking beverages that are expected to cause symptoms. The maximum dose is 40 mg every 24 hours. Do not take Acid Control (Famotidine) every day for more than 2 weeks without seeking medical advice.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to use Acid Control (Famotidine) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store Acid Control (Famotidine) at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
