What is Celecoxib?

Celecoxib belongs to the category of Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is used to relieve and manage arthritis, painful menstrual periods, and reduces the acute pain caused by injuries, surgery, and other medical or dental procedures.

Uses

Celecoxib mainly acts by reducing natural chemicals in the body that are responsible for inflammation and pain. It is primarily used for relief and management of various pain or inflammations:

  • Rheumatoid Arthritis (swelling in the lining of the joints)

  • Osteoarthritis (the breakdown of the lining of joints)

  • Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (a type of arthritis that affects children)

  • Acute pains such as injuries, surgery and other medical or dental procedures

  • Menstrual cramps

  • Ankylosing spondylitis

  • Migraine headaches; however does not prevent migraine attacks or reduce the number of headaches

The medication may be prescribed for other uses; ask your physician or pharmacist for detailed information.

Directions for use

  • Read the patient information leaflet if available from the pharmacist before taking Celecoxib and reach on time to get your refill. Ask your doctor or pharmacist queries if you do not understand anything described on the patient information leaflet.

  • It is mainly available as a tablet to be consumed orally with food, usually once or twice or as prescribed by your physician.

  • Try to take this tablet daily at the same time.

  • Do not use this medication less or more than prescribed by your doctor.

  • Do not stop taking this medication abruptly without consulting your doctor.

If You Miss the Dose.

  • If you happen to miss a dose of Celecoxib, take the missed dose as soon as you remember.

  • However, if it is almost time for the next dose, do not take the missed dose and continue with your next scheduled dose.

  • Do not take a double dose to compensate for the missed dose.

What are the side-effects and risks of Celecoxib?

Like all other medications, Celecoxib can cause side effects. Although it is unlikely that everyone would experience these symptoms, it is vital that you are aware of what could be the possible side effects. Common side effects:

  • High blood pressure

  • Heart attack

  • Rash

  • Itching

  • Vomiting

  • Stomach ache

  • Diarrhea

  • Indigestion

  • Swollen ankles, legs and/or hands

  • Urinary infections

  • Muscle stiffness

  • Difficulty in swallowing

  • Worsening of allergies

Uncommon side effects:

  • Stroke

  • Heart failure

  • Palpitations of heart

  • Raised itchy rashes

  • Leg cramps

  • Constipation

  • Burping

  • Stomach inflammation

  • Blurred vision

  • Ringing in ears

  • Mouth pain or sores

  • Difficulty in hearing

  • High potassium levels

  • Fatigue

  • Muscle muscles

  • Anxiety

  • Depression

  • Drowsiness

  • Anemia

  • Abnormalities in kidney function

  • Abnormalities in liver function

  • Worsening of high blood pressure

Rare side effects:

  • Bleeding ulcers in the stomach

  • Reduced number of white blood cells

  • Difficulty coordinating muscular movements

  • Increased sensitivity to light

  • Loss of hair

Unknown side effects:

  • Bleeding within the brain causing death

  • Serious allergic reactions

  • Bleeding of stomach or intestine

  • Liver damage or failure

  • Kidney problems

  • Blood clot

  • Worsening of epilepsy

  • Inflammation of blood vessels

  • Blockage of artery or vein

  • Reduction in white or red blood cells

  • Chest pain

  • Skin discoloration

  • Menstrual disturbances

  • Headache

  • Flushing

Who should not take Celecoxib?

You should not take Celecoxib if you have the following conditions. Inform your doctor if you have the following conditions:

  • Allergic to sulfonamides

  • Stomach or intestinal bleeding

  • Severe Liver disorder

  • Severe kidney disorder

  • Ulcerative colitis

  • Crohn's Disease

  • Heart failure

  • Cerebrovascular disease

  • Angina

  • Ischaemic heart disease

  • Blockage of blood vessels of heart or brain

  • Blood circulation problems

Talk to your doctor before taking Celecoxib if:

  • You are taking any other medication, are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy.

  • You are allergic to Celecoxib or any other ingredients in the tablet

  • You are allergic to any other medication.

  • You are taking any other drugs, over-the-counter medicines, herbal products or nutritional supplements

Besides, certain medicines may interfere with Celecoxib's working and thus might not be safe to take them together. Do inform your physician or pharmacist of all the medications that you are consuming. Some of the medicines which cannot be taken together are:

  • Acetylsalicylic acid

  • Blood clotting agents such as Warfarin

  • NSAIDs such as Ibuprofen or Diclofenac

  • Dextromethorphan

  • ACE inhibitors such as Captopril

  • angiotensin II antagonist such Losartan

  • Diuretics such as Acetazolamide

  • Fluconazole

  • Rifampicin

  • Lithium

  • Methotrexate

  • Carbamazepine

  • Barbiturates

  • Ciclosporin

When should you not take Celecoxib?

You should not take Celecoxib if:

  • It has passed the expiry date of the medicine printed on the pack.
