Trileptal How to Take

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) belongs to the group of medications known as antiepileptics. It is used to control Epilepsy in adults and children over 6 years of age. It is used alone or in combination with other medications for a particular type of epilepsy called partial seizures.

Seizures are caused by the uncontrolled spreading of electrical activity across the brain. Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) works by controlling this electrical activity.

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.

Your doctor may have suggested Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. Do not stop taking Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) without consulting your doctor.

Trileptal Dosage

The usual dose of Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) for adults ranges from 300 mg to 600 mg twice a day, but some people may need up to 1,200 mg twice a day. The maximum dose is 1,200 mg twice a day.

For children over 6 years of age, the dose is based on body weight and is taken in divided doses, twice per day.

Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) may be taken with or without food.

Many things can affect the dose of medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

If you are using the liquid form of Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine), shake the bottle of liquid well before measuring a dose. Use an oral syringe to measure each dose of the liquid, as it gives a more accurate measurement than household teaspoons.

It is important to take Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible and continue with your regular schedule. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular dosing schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed one. If you are not sure what to do after missing a dose, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Store Trileptal (Oxcarbazepine) at room temperature and keep it out of the reach of children. The liquid can be used for 7 weeks after opening the bottle (unless the expiry date on the package shows an earlier date), after which it should be discarded.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
